Spatial modeling and analysis

UDPG has developed several strategies for spatial modeling and mapping of geocryological parameters. Our work involves simulating and mapping both the contemporary and predicted distribution of permafrost, at scales ranging from regional to circumpolar. We have produced maps of the active layer at local, regional, and circumpolar scales. The group has also published extensively on sampling designs and implementation strategies. Geographic information systems technology forms a central focus of our research, and a specialized geocryological software package was developed through our collaboration with the State Hydrological Institute. Recently, we have developed a topical focus on evaluating permafrost as a natural hazard over large areas (Nelson, F.E. et al, 2001)
